Class Memories From 1977

The fight I'm thinking of took place either in the spring of 1976 or 1977. It took place between George Obourn (classs of 1978) and some kid whose name I don't recall. These two got into an argument behind the school after school one afternoon, probably about something trivial, and decided to settle their differences violently. I remember the other kid making a remark to me about George being afraid to fight because he was shaking, apparently not realizing one can be shaking from anger, as well as from fear.He quickly found this out once the fight got under way, since George gave him, among other things, a pretty solid bodyslam. Luckily, school security showed up & broke things up before anybody got seriously hurt, hauling both participants off to Mr. hatton's office, where each received a suspension and, presumably, a hefty number of demerits. This was the only school fight I personally saw which could have resulted in someone getting seriously hurt, since all the other fights I saw were basically scuffles rather than serious fights.

The girl I have in mind was Kathleen "Katie" Wilson. IMy memories of her are not so much that she was "hot", although she was certainly attractive, but rather that she was one of my better female friends at Richwoods. Those of you who remember her will remember that she was sort of one the quiet side, but not really shy or withdrawn. Actually, she was quite friendly once she got to know someone. I lost touch with her after she graduated mid-term of our senior year. The last time I heard anything about her was 10 years ago, when I had the chance to speak to her father, and he said at that time she was living in Yelm, Washington, near Seattle, and was married, although I don't remember what he said her married name was.

Come on, '77 grads, let's get with it! I know I'm not the only person from our class who has memories or stories they could post on this site. Let's see how many other people from our class can get involved with this thing. With over 400 people who graduated in our class, ther must be SOMEBODY who can add their stories to this site.

I wanted to use this space to mention the passing of some Class of '77 grads, Dave Wesselhoft, Jim Tinthoff, and Roxi Hoerr. I heard about them through another alum who wasn't able to provide details on their passing, which is why I didn't use the In Memoriam page. Perhaps someone who has more information will see this and post it on In Memoriam.

I remember that a lot of the kids from our senior class spent their open lunch periods at either the McDonald's or Arby's on University Street. Some days it seemed like half the kids were at one or the other for lunch. Also, does anybody else out ther remember Farrell's Ice cream Parlor at Northwoods Mall? And who that grew up in the 70s could forget Orange Julius, also at Northwoods? As I recall, there were 2 of these at the mall.

Do any of you who were at Richwoods in the mid 70s remember our school's first trip the the basketball playoffs in the spring of 1975? We had a giant outside pep rally in front of the school for all of 7th hour the day before the playoffs started. I think the entire school, faculty included, just about went nuts that day.Unfortunately, we lost the championship, bringing home a 4th place trophy.

I can still remember the spring of '76, when we thought we were going to get another crack at a State basketball championship. Unfotunately, we lost to Galesburg in the Regionals, 85-79. It was our only loss that year in basketball. At that time, we set the record up to that point for best winning percentage in basketball, which was .963.

The teachers who stand out in my memory are science teachers Mr. Auriene and Mr. Antoine, history teachers Mr. Driscoll and Mr. Peeler, English teachers Mr. Knopf and Mrs. Greener, driver's ed. teacher Mr. Easter, and P.E. teacher Mr. Simper. Unfortunately, Mrs. Greener and orchestra director Mr. Szepessy have both died in the last few years, although I don't remember the exact dates of their deaths.

Does anyone else out ther remember Mr. Defabbio? He taught a class i took as a sophomore called "History of the Northwest World". This covered the history of Norh America, England & Europe, the Middle East & North Africa. Mr. Defabbio was interested in Arab Culture, and on at least one occasion came to class dressed as a Muslim pilgrim to Mecca. This class was open to students from sophomore through senior, and some of the kids I remember from my class were, besides myself, Kathleen "Katie" Wilson, Rick Peters, Chuck Pizer, Dennis Stein, and Jim Nickles. Do any of you remember Mr. Defabbio or any of the students I mentioned? If so, go ahead & list your own memories of these people.

This is more of a memorial than a school memory. Mr. John "Elmer" Szepessy was our orchestra director from the mid 70's through the early 80's, before that he was at Woodruff for about 30 years. He was also a longtime member of the Peoria Symphony Orchestra. He died on July 21, 2005 at Methodist Medical Center, Peoria, Il., aged 90.

This seemed like a good place to note the passing of Mr. Don Wyss, who was a coach and P.E. teacher at Richwoods for more than 20 years, 1970-1994. He coached baseball and football as well as teaching Boys' P.E. At the time of his tetirement in 1994, he was administrative assistant for student activities. During his own high school days at Woodruff, he played baseball, basketball, and football. On Feb. 18, 1989, he was inducted into the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame. Mr. Wyss died on May 4, 2009 at Manor Court, Peoria, Il.

I wanted to use this space to note the passing of Mr. Leonard F. Korgie, who taught history, economics, and social studies at Richwoods foe 33 years. Mr. Korgie was born on June 30, 1924, and died at Proctor Hospital, Peoria, Il., on Sept. 6, 2009. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and was a bona-fide war hero, winning the Purple Heart, 5 Bronze Stars and 1 Silver Star for bravery in combat, and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. Towards the end of his career at Richwoods, he was twice voted Teacher of the Year, in 1981 & 1983. Mr. Korgie was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, on Oct. 1, 2008, and by his son, David, in 1974, while a student at Richwoods.
